I'm Brandon. I research consumer behavior and teach marketing. Before starting my PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder, I graduated from BYU with a degree in Marketing Management and worked as an Assistant Brand Manager for a pet food manufacturer and as a Promotions Manager for a national chain of trampoline parks. The second job was more fun than the first.
That being said, the first job opened my eyes to the world of luxury pet food. If you don't believe that's a thing, google that phrase and look at the brands that bid for that keyword on Google ads. This sparked my interest in researching luxury, status, and signaling which eventually evolved into my job market paper, Uncomfortable Luxury: How Audience Economic Status Drives Avoidance of Status Signaling. As it turns out, people behave in distinctively fascinating ways when it comes to luxury consumption.
I also had the opportunity to explore the power of status and signals in a paper called Revealing and Mitigating Racial Bias and Discrimination in Financial Services. I'll let you read that one if you want to find out more.
When I'm not in the world of academia, you will most likely find me outdoors somewhere with my wonderful wife and my three increasingly exuberant sons.
